A Letter from Fran McCarthy: Global Opportunity to Support Children
This summer, one of our DECS team members – Fran McCarthy – will travel to Tanzania with a non-profit organization (Global Protagonists) affiliated with the University of Edinburgh. Fran will be serving the Massai children through a One Health mission.
Below is a letter from Fran, which provides more details about the work. If you’d like to directly support the children of Massai with a donation, please use Fran’s Amazon Wishlist. Learn more about Fran on the DECS About Us webpage.
Dear Friends, Family, and Colleagues –
This summer I am going to be working with a non-profit organization affiliated with the University of Edinburgh. This organization is Global Protagonists. This was born from a simple idea: the world doesn’t need more spectators. It needs protagonists. I love traveling but often wonder, “What can I actually do?”
Global Protagonists connects individuals with global conservation projects. Participants actively assist scientists and local communities in wildlife protection and ecosystem restoration. These immersive experiences directly fund critical conservation efforts, offering hands-on contributions to urgent environmental missions. This is a One Health mission.
The activities are:
· Working with the Maasai children, vaccinations, taking them on a one-day jungle safari. (see the children’s wish list that I have published on Amazon)
· Lead community talks and animal-welfare workshops to improve livelihoods, health, and conservation outcomes.
· Building beehive fences that keep elephants out of farms and create income for families
· Launch the first PenPal program connecting Maasai students with other students in the United States (I already have two classes that have volunteered – We’ll see what age groups are interested).
· Working with local doctors and nurses at a human-health outreach to see how people, animals, and ecosystems are intertwined – the One Health Principle
· Assist in running mobile veterinary clinics for donkeys, dogs, and livestock. Working with a Jungle Veterinarian in a spay and neuter clinic for the domestic pets of the Maasai. We will also be going into the field to assist with injured animals.
Please help me in working with the children by donating from the wish list. I’m sharing my list from Amazon with you:

I am able to bring 100 lbs with me in plastic tubs. I will bring back pictures and experiences to share.
Graciously,
